Suburban St. Louis businessman John Brunner has supplied nearly $7 million to his Republican campaign for U.S. Senate.

Federal campaign finance reports show Brunner contributed almost $2 million to his campaign during the first 18 days of July. He also loaned his campaign an additional $250,000 during that time.

Brunner has provided the vast majority of the $7.4 million raised for his Aug. 7 primary against former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman and Congressman Todd Akin.

Finance reports show Steelman supplied her campaign an additional $100,000 last week, on top of the $500,000 she had previously loaned her campaign.
Akin has not self-financed his Senate campaign.

The Republicans are competing for the right to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in the November general election.
