If you’re looking for something new to do this summer, we have compiled a fun list of cheap things to do in the region.

But I?think I?know what most lake area residents would consider their greatest cheap escape — home.
To be specific, it’s the deck, or the porch, of their home.
My deck is a miniature food garden with hanging baskets of tomatoes, containers for lettuce, a smattering of herbs and — new this year — a strawberry patio plant.

I should say, I did have containers of lettuce as I’m still trying to figure out a way to fend off the village of raccoons that is settled in my neighborhood.

Their evening raids are so regular that I’m beginning to think it’s one of these new-fashioned “community gardens.”

I have to confess I find some delight in their obvious frustration at not being able to reach my tomato plants hanging from the roof above their heads; they keep pulling the gardening tools and extra containers off the shelves just below.

From my deck, I water my plants, gather what I?want for dinner and keep an eye out for critters.
Over the bass drone of boats zooming along the lake far below my hillside home, I  hear the rhythmic chatter of frogs and insects.
A great escape indeed.
