As gas prices rise on land, the cost to fuel up your boat out on the water goes up as well. That may well a little more coving out and a few less lengthy trips around the lake, according to officials from the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitors Bureau. Rather than dock their vessels when the pinch is on from high gas prices, the CVB estimates boaters will shorten the distances they travel and find just one spot to hang out for the day.

Get a refund
Because the fuel is used for nonhighway purposes, recreational boaters can apply for a $0.17 per-gallon refund of state sales tax on fuel purchased for use in watercraft. To receive the refund, complete a motor fuel refund claim, and for first time applicants, a motor fuel refund application. Refund claims must be filed within one year from the date of purchase or April 15 following the year of purchase, whichever is later. Original invoices or receipts must accompany all claims.
The refund application forms 4923, 4924 and 4925 are available from any Missouri county clerk’s office, from forms by fax at 573-751-4800. To download the forms from the internet, go to www.dor.mo.gov. If you are unable to access these forms otherwise, request them by telephone at 573-751-7671.
