  • I attended the Camdenton School District’s forum on Tuesday, May 15.  The forum explained the progression of the ACLU lawsuit that required the Camdenton Schools to allow access to positive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) websites.

  • I attended the Camdenton School District’s forum on Tuesday, May 15.  The forum explained the progression of the ACLU lawsuit that required the Camdenton Schools to allow access to positive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) websites.  Several community members spoke in favor of allowing access to the websites and ending the lawsuit.  Others in the audience clapped after hearing these responses.
    During the forum, references were made about a “homosexual lifestyle.”  Saying that a person leads a “homosexual lifestyle” indicates that the individual is actively choosing to be L, G, B or T.  My understanding is that a person just knows that they have an  L, G, B or T orientation, just as I knew by 3rd grade that I liked boys.  
    I did not learn to like boys or learn to lead a “heterosexual lifestyle.”  Saying that there is a “homosexual lifestyle” also suggests that all people with an L, G, B or T orientation think and act the same way. 
    This would be like saying all people with hazel eyes think and act a certain way.  I guess we could call that the “hazel-eyed lifestyle.”
    Our community is sending a message to students with an L, G, B or T orientation that there is something wrong with them because of a small part of them that they did not choose (just as I did not choose to have hazel eyes).
     I believe that school is the right place to always treat students with an L, G, B or T orientation just as we do every other student.  Written words, spoken words and actions need to convey acceptance.
