Given the 20 percent cut in the department’s budget by the board, it is not surprising that morale might be low. The private sector has long been dealing with these issues. From experience, I can say that operating on a shoestring can be stressful for everyone — from boss to employee to customer.

So, without any other information being made available, it seems that the city continues to stew in a bad mix of poor economy and small town politics.

Cuts have maintained financial stability but seem to be causing internal instability.

But that’s what just about everybody is dealing with these days. The board and staff need to toughen up and figure out a way to live with it for the interim.

I wish the new chief, Mark Black, luck. For better or for worse, however, all of the bustle over the police department is hopefully behind them now.

The drama that has reigned in the city over the past couple of years distracts from real problems that need to be addressed.

Laurie operates from a small perspective. Combined with a tough economy, it has hit a rough patch.
The board needs to focus on the future and its role in creating a good environment for residents and businesses. This is an ongoing effort that has very little to do with the police. Law enforcement is a basic service and operates under most people’s radar.

We are in a new world of changing expectations. The board must find or create a niche for the city in the wider world with benefits for the everyday citizen that make it a good place to live and do business.
