An 18-year-old driver from Kaiser is in serious condition after striking a School of the Osage school bus on Highway 54 near Mount Carmel Road on Tuesday.


An 18-year-old driver from Kaiser is in serious condition after striking a School of the Osage school bus on Highway 54 near Mount Carmel Road on Tuesday.

Richard A. Adam was flown from the scene by Staff For Life helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment. A passenger in the 1993 Ford Adam was driving, Brad C. Gilbert, 23, also from Kaiser, sustained moderate injuries in the crash. Gilbert was transported by ambulance to Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach for treatment.

The accident occurred as the school bus was in the median on Highway 54 waiting to turn onto the westbound lanes. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's report, the School of the Osage school bus failed to yield to Adam's vehicle, striking it.

The driver of the bus, Mark R. Elliott, 53, of Eldon, was not injured in the crash. He is reported as wearing a seat belt.
There were no students on the bus at the time of the crash, which was around 4:18 p.m. Traffic on both directions of Highway 54 was tied up for several minutes as the helicopter carrying Adam took off.
Adam and Gilbert were both reported as not wearing a seat belt.

Elliott was issued a ticket for failure to yield. According to School of the Osage poicy, Elliott will face a drug test as a result of the accident.
