In honor of World Spay Day, Tuesday, Feb. 28, STAFF Animal Shelter in Sunrise Beach is trying to double the number of cats spayed and neutered at their clinic in one day.

World Spay Day is an annual event of the Humane Society International. The event is held to inspire people to save animals' lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. Educational events are being held all around the world during the month of February, which is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month.

Pet owners can bring their cats to the new “Murphy Spay and Neuter Clinic” located at the STAFF property on Highway 5 in Sunrise Beach anytime between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

STAFF opened the clinic Monday, Jan. 2 and they have since spayed or neutered a total of 115 animals. In a normal clinic day 15 cats are spayed or neutered and STAFF is reaching towards the goal of performing at least 30 surgeries in one day. “This will greatly help decrease the over population of cats in our community,” said STAFF Director Dawn Ely.

The surgeries cost $25 for cats, and $45 for dogs. There is an additional cost for animals over 50 pounds. STAFF does have limited funds available, through a $2,000 grant they received from the State of Missouri, for low income families who qualify.
