Call it the practice before official practice begins. The Camdenton High School boys' soccer team is using this week's camp to get prepared for fall practices, which begin in less than two weeks.

The Lakers began their final summer camp Monday at the field located below the north side of Bob Shore Stadium. Lakers coach Jason Ingold said this week's camp not only gives players a chance to get in game shape, but also allows for them to get familiar with one another.

"This week, we plan on getting some conditioning in, creating some bonding opportunities through the grades; especially the new guys. We've had some move-ins," he said.

Getting in work during camp will also mean more productive practices later on, he added.

"It's to get these guys acclimated to this heat, but also acclimated to some of the drills we're gonna be doing this year," Ingold said. "It's helpful when we do this, because when we get into the season, we don't have to teach a whole new drill to these guys."

Ingold is already planning some slight tweaks to the practice schedule.

Players are now mostly responsible for getting pre-practice stretching and warmups done on their own.

"Stretching is important, but we waste a lot of practice time on it," Ingold told a huddled group of Lakers before camp began.

Official practice starts on Aug. 8.

This weekend, the Lakers will play in the Show-Me State Games. The School of the Osage boys' team is included in the field as well.

"It gives us a good look at who might be playing," Ingold said. "Most of the guys that we see potentially playing on the varsity team are going, so that will give us a good look at everybody."
