U.S. Navy veteran and longtime owner of Lakeside Resort; loved to RV

John Ira Gruber Jr. 73, of Cole Camp, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital, Columbia. He was born on May 27, 1938, in Chicago, Ill., the only child of John Ira Sr. and Hazel (Shore) Gruber.
John grew up in Whittier, Calif., where he met and married Katherine (Grothe) Gruber on Aug. 6, 1960. Unto this union, two children were born. While living in Mission Viejo, Calif., he owned and operated a hair salon. In 1975, he moved to Missouri to pursue his dream of owning a marina. John owned and operated Lakeside Resort for more than 20 years. Upon retiring, he developed a passion for golf, playing as often as possible and traveling to various golf courses in and out of state. When not out on the course, he enjoyed reading and boating. Prior to their illnesses, he and Martha enjoyed traveling in their RV. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy.
Besides his companion of 14 years, Martha Narron, he is survived by a daughter, Heidi Dixon and her husband, Treavor, of Cole Camp; a son, John V. Gruber and his wife, Christine, of Angels Camp, Calif.; five grandchildren, Madison, Paige, Ty, Alatia and Andrew, and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and ex-wife Katherine Gruber.
John's wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
