Eighty years ago in 1931, Oma and Noma DeGraffenreid made what is believed to be the first trip by car across the newly completed and opened Bagnell Dam. Their leisurely drive signaled the start of what has become a Mecca of recreation, commerce and real estate in the central United States.

To celebrate their feat, the annual Oma Noma Days will be held May 13-15 on The Strip in Lake Ozark.

Also, Oma and Noma’s grandfather and father (Tennison DeGraffenreid) were an integral part of the dam’s construction. The people of the Lake of the Ozarks area deem this to be an important event and celebrate the Oma and Noma Days in tribute to these vivacious women.

One of the most significant events of the weekend is the opening of Bagnell Dam to public tours. This is the first time since 9/11 that the public will be allowed into the facility.

The tours will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the dam. Access is by crossing the dam and turning onto the access road near the top of the hill.
