(AP) — The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is investigating the release of more than 50,000 gallons of sewage into a Warrensburg creek.

Warrensburg officials notified the DNR Monday about the release from the city's east wastewater treatment plant. The department said in a news release that more than 50,000 gallons of wastewater escaped into Bear Creek from the sewage collection system.

The Sedalia Democrat reports that the overflow was discovered Sunday, but it was unclear when it began. It was stopped by 7 a.m. Monday.

Investigators were working to the cause of the overflow and document potential environmental damage.
