Off the beaten path, this lake-area hot spot may not be on the water, but its location is, still, truly unique.

With 38 acres along the Gasconade River you not only get to dine in a unique spot, you get quite a view. Owner Gary Dyer purchased The Cave Restaurant and Resort  last year and has been offering customers an experience with their meal.

Originally a dance hall in the 1920s, it was modified and dug for years in the ’90s to make into a restaurant. An elevator takes people to the third floor where they can sit in the spacious dining area. The food is cooked on the second floor and shuttled up by conveyor. A dehumidifier pulls nine pounds of water out of the air per day. There is a panoramic window overlooking the Gasconade River.

On the menu is everything from onion rings to a 24 ounce Ribeye. Chicken, fish, beef, pork, Italian food, sandwhiches make up the other items on the menu. Desserts include a Jack Daniels bread pudding to blackberry cobbler.

New this year are catfish fry's, held in the picnic area on Friday and Saturday night between 5-8 p.m. You get your choice of catfish or chicken tenders and several heaping sides. They have also added barbecue to the menu, offering everything from smoked, ribs, brisket, pork steaks, polish sausages and smoked chicken.

Dyer said they are working on putting in additional gift shops and a possible candy store to offer patrons something to do after they eat.

In November and December, the restaurant will transform the property into a winter wonderland for what they call the Enchanted Cave Christmas.

They will light up the cabins, offer hay rides and hot chocolate or apple cider in the waiting area. The cave will be decorated with Christmas music playing.
