Zack Wheat Post 624's American Legion baseball team faces a difficult challenge this weekend. Camdenton's summer leaguers come off a 24-3 mopping of Eugene, but go against much tougher competition in the Route 66 Classic. Springfield and Lebanon host the two tournament pools.

"They definitely didn't do us any favors in that bracket setup. We are in a very, very difficult pool and we have to travel all the way to Springfield instead of going to Lebanon," Camdenton coach Matt Moulder said.

The summer version of the Camdenton Lakers plays teams from Park Hills and Glendale on Friday morning that appear to be stacked. A Camdenton High School alum, Moulder would not implicate organizers from Lebanon but wouldn't rule anything out either.

"I don't know who I made mad, but apparently I made somebody mad because they didn't do us any favors," Moulder joked.

The Lakers will have fresh pitching arms for the tournament. Cory Simpson, Austin Martin, Derek Van Kluyve, Robbie Hoffman, and Jake Singleton among others are all rested and available.

Lakers move up

Camdenton's American Legion also solved an age discrepancy. The Lakers will face tougher competition in the postseason in order to accommodate two players.

The Lakers intended to compete in the junior legion postseason tournament and play in a small district with Westphalia. Seniors-to-be Jake Singleton and Levi Calvert turn 18 in the 2010 calendar year and were ruled ineligible for junior Legion play. Not wanting to leave players off the postseason roster, Moulder made a move to keep his third baseman and first baseman on the roster.

"We are bumping up to senior Legion. We spoke with the state people. We got the roster approved," Moulder said.

The move means Camdenton will play Jefferson City and Fulton in postseason district play. The schedule of games has not been determined.
