  • Authorities are investigating the death of an infant found in the trunk of a car while agencies were conducting a search warrant at a home in St. Elizabeth looking for possible drug activity.
According to the Miller County Sheriff Bill Abbott, five people were arrested on drug-related charges. Emily S. Usnick, 33, of Eldon; John P. Pawelczak, 37, of St. Elizabeth; Belinda G. Voiles, 49, of St. Elizabeth; Candice M. Burns, 32, of Decaturville; and Victoria F. Stark, 48, of St. Elizabeth remain in the Miller County Jail on $500,000 bond each.
Several agencies went to the home after receiving an anonymous tip on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. As they were conducting the search, authorities found the body of a "very young infant," according to a news release issued by the sheriff's department Thursday morning. Investigators are working on leads on persons of interest in the case, the release states.
The Miller County Sheriff's Department is being assisted by members of the Mid-Missouri Multi-jurisdicational Drug Task Force, Camden County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri State Technical Assistance Team, the Eldon Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department.
Abbott declined to release any additional information about the case. He would not say if the death was being investigated as a homicide.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday at the Boone/Callaway County Medical Examiner's Office.
