Navy veteran active in Eldon community, city council
James R. “Jim” Jones, 71, of Eldon, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Mo.
He was born in Mt. Pleasant on May 30, 1937, son of Richard Vernon and Ruby Mae (Bacon) Jones. Both are deceased.
On July 21, 1962, in Barnett, Mo., he was married to Arlene Taylor, who survives at the home.
He was a Navy veteran. He retired from AT&T in 1990 after 37 years of service.
He was a long-time member of the Eldon Country Club and a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He was a past member of the Eldon Gun Club and a past volunteer fire fighter for the city of Eldon.
He served for several years on the Eldon city council. He was an avid sports fan, coaching little league and playing softball and golf.
He was a member of Ninth Street Christian Church. In recent years, his favorite times have been spent with his grandchildren and enjoying making special memories at family gatherings.
Other survivors include two daughters, Gayle Bledsoe and husband Christopher of Eldon, and Jill Kliethermes and husband Danny of Eldon; four grandchildren, Cody and Shelby Bledsoe and Cole and Kylie Kliethermes, all of Eldon; one brother, Ricky Jones and wife Mary of Eddy, Texas; and one nephew, Eric Jones of Eddy.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Ninth Street Christian Church in Eldon. Rev. Chris Reynolds and Rev. Bob Buster will officiate. Interment with military honors under the direction of the Miller County VFW Post 2442 will be in Eldon City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday at Rekus Funeral Home in Eldon.
