This summer firefighters will once again compete to see which city can collect the most for the Muscular Dystrophy Association annual Fill-the-Boot campaign.
These local heroes will be asking communities to fill their boots with cash to help local children and adults who have been diagnosed with one of 43 forms of muscular dystrophy.
Local fire departments will collecting donations for the annual fundraiser and turn over money during the 43rd Labor Day Telethon. The broadcast raises funds for MDA’s programs of research, services and education for children and adults affected by any of more than 40 diseases in MDA’s program.
During the 2007 MDA Telethon, pledges and donations brought in a record $63.8 million.
MDA is a nonprofit voluntary health agency working to defeat muscular dystrophy and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.  The Association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
