When the weather warms up, many people enter the water that may not normally do so.  It’s a good way to cool off. The problem comes when weak swimmers do not utilize flotation devices to assist them.
It doesn’t take long to become fatigued or panicked, if your swimming skills are weak.  The situation can quickly escalate and the victim’s heart rate increases dramatically. This can further affect the victim’s breathing and ability to stay afloat.
The simple act of putting on a life jacket, or at the very least, keeping a flotation device within arms reach, could certainly prevent most of these tragedies.
Distances are difficult to estimate on the water, which can also be a contributing factor. It may not seem like a very long way to swim initially, but once a person actually begins swimming, they suddenly realize it’s much further.
Personal flotation devices are always a good idea, but particularly for those persons with questionable swimming ability. If you’re going to estimate your swimming ability, make sure you err on the side of caution.
In at least two of our drownings locally, health conditions may have been a contributing factor. Health problems, cramping and other issues could arise at any time, which only emphasize the importance of personal flotation devices.
