  • Camden County employees will receive an extra $500 this holiday season. On Wednesday, the Camden County Commission voted to approve supplemental pay for all full-time employees.

  • Camden County employees will receive an extra $500 this holiday season. On Wednesday, the Camden County Commission voted to approve supplemental pay for all full-time employees.
    "For clarity, it is not a bonus. It is supplemental pay. This is the same mechanism by which the Sheriff's Department receives their extra pay each pay period through the state of Missouri from court fees. Public employees cannot receive bonuses, but may receive supplemental pay," Presiding Commissioner Kris Franken said.
    The supplemental pay will be given out on Dec. 13 for the pay period of Nov. 24 through Dec. 7.
    "The Commission was approached by the County Recorder, Donnie Snelling, about approving a supplemental salary authorization and he indicated that if the Commission would be willing to approve such an authorization, that he would be willing to transfer $192,400 from his discretionary fund into County Revenue to offset the cost of the pay authorization," Franken added.
    The $192,400 represents $500 per employee for 296 employees ($148,000) and the accompanying tax and benefit burden that results from the supplemental increase ($44,400).
    According to Franken, this is the first time since he has been in office that all county employees will receive supplemental pay. He did say that Sheriff Dept. employees have been receiving supplemental pay for about two and a half years. This comes on the heels of a two percent pay raise for all county employees that was recently approved by the commission. The raise will be effective Jan. 1, 2014.
    The idea of giving employees supplemental pay came directly from the Camden County Recorder, Donnie Snelling.
    Snelling told the Lake Sun that he actually wanted to do something similar last year but was not sure how to go about it. The fund the money is coming from is what Snelling referred to as the preservation fund. For every document recorded in his office, the county receives $2.
    "It has built up to a sizeable fund," Snelling said.
    He also added that with the downturn in the economy, he simply wanted to do something to raise morale with employees. He feels as if the supplemental pay will actually turn around and benefit the county. Employees will receive the supplemental pay and use it in the local economy which will eventually circle back to the county.
    "Looks like, to me, a win-win situation," Snelling added.
    Second District Commissioner Cliff Luber also supported the idea.
    "I am appreciative that our Recorder Of Deeds, Donnie Snelling, has agreed to transfer $192,500 from their fee fund into the General Revenue which will allow the Commission to distribute a $500. supplemental disbursement to all full time county employees,"Luber said.
